Clashes in Southern Syria Claim Over Thirty Lives
The Ministry conveyed its grave concern and sorrow over the “bloody developments” that erupted late Sunday in Suwayda’s Al-Maqous neighborhood, describing the violence as a confrontation between “local armed groups and tribes.”
It stated, “In this context, the Ministry of Interior confirms that units of its forces, in coordination with the Ministry of Defense, will intervene directly in the region to resolve the conflict, stop clashes, impose security, prosecute those responsible for the events, and refer them to the competent judiciary.”
A state-run news outlet reported that several army personnel lost their lives attempting to shield civilians from the outlawed factions during the fighting.
Additional casualty figures have not yet been released.
Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab attributed the persistent unrest in Suwayda and its surrounding areas to “the absence of state institutions, particularly military and security ones.”
“There is no solution to this except imposing security (measures) and activating the role of institutions to ensure civil peace and the return of life to its normal state in all its details,” Khattab said on his X account.
The deadly clashes began late Sunday between local Bedouin tribes and Druze militias, causing casualties among civilians and militia members alike.
Notably, Syria’s long-standing leader Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia in December, marking the end of the Baath Party’s rule that began in 1963.
In January, a new transitional government led by President Ahmad al-Sharaa was established to guide the nation forward.
