Syrian Defense Minister Declares Ceasefire in Suwayda
In an announcement posted on X, he addressed military personnel operating in the area, stating: “To all units operating within Suwayda city, we announce a complete ceasefire following an agreement with the city’s elders and dignitaries.”
Despite the cessation of hostilities, Abu Qasra clarified that government troops retain the right to retaliate only in response to immediate assaults or “outlaw groups” identified as firing upon them.
The defense minister also revealed intentions to transfer control of Suwayda’s districts to internal security authorities.
This shift will take place “as soon as clearance operations are completed to restore order, enable residents to return to their homes, and reestablish stability in the city.”
In addition, Abu Qasra mentioned that military police forces have been stationed in Suwayda to oversee soldier behavior and ensure disciplinary measures are enforced against any breaches of conduct.
Simultaneously, the Syrian military has begun pulling back its heavy weaponry from Suwayda in preparation for handing over responsibility to internal security services tasked with safeguarding public safety, according to an official state news outlet.
Earlier on Tuesday, the religious leadership representing Syria’s Druze minority called on all armed groups within Suwayda to fully align with government security efforts and to relinquish their arms voluntarily.
