Italian government expresses “deep concern” over situation in Iran

(MENAFN) The Italian government has publicly expressed serious unease over developments in Iran, voicing alarm at the violent measures reportedly being used against demonstrators and calling on Iranian authorities to uphold basic civil liberties.

In an official statement issued Tuesday, Italy’s conservative-led government urged Tehran to protect the rights of its population and ensure the safety of those taking part in protests. "Italy calls on the Iranian authorities to ensure respect for the rights of the people, including the right to expression and peaceful assembly, and the safety of those demonstrating in the streets,” the statement said.

Rome also emphasized that it is coordinating closely with international partners in an effort to ease tensions and encourage a resolution that aligns with public demands inside Iran. “Together with its European and G7 partners, the Italian government continues to work towards a positive solution to the crisis, respectful of the Iranian people's aspirations for freedom and equal rights," it added.

As demonstrations persist across Iranian cities, reports indicate that authorities have escalated their use of force. Italy, along with the European Union and the United States, has been sending increasingly direct warnings to Tehran aimed at preventing further instability and loss of life.

The unrest began in late December at Tehran’s Grand Bazaar, driven by severe economic strain and the rapid fall in the value of the national currency, before spreading to numerous urban centers nationwide.

Although no official death toll has been released, reports from rights organizations say at least 646 people have been killed so far, including both protesters and members of the security forces, while more than 1,000 others have been injured. The same reports indicate that at least 10,681 individuals have been arrested during demonstrations held at 585 locations across the country, spanning 186 cities in all 31 provinces.

Meanwhile, according to reports, the US military is assessing what it described as “powerful options” amid the intensifying crackdown, signaling growing international concern over the trajectory of the crisis.
