Druze leader escalates incitement against Syria

(MENAFN) A Druze religious figure in Syria’s southern Suwayda province has once again intensified his rhetoric against the Syrian state, going so far as to describe his followers as an integral part of Israel.

In remarks published on Tuesday, Hikmat al-Hijri openly positioned himself and his supporters as aligned with Israel, a stance that does not reflect the broader Druze community in Suwayda. The province’s Druze population is guided by three religious authorities whose views often differ, and al-Hijri’s followers constitute a minority that is not considered representative of the wider community.

During the interview, al-Hijri stated, “We see ourselves as an inseparable part of the existence of the State of Israel. This relationship is international and of critical importance.” He further argued that despite Israel’s repeated military actions across the region, it remains, in his view, “the only guarantor and the party authorized to shape future arrangements.”

Expanding on his vision for the future, al-Hijri said that “the primary demand is full independence,” suggesting that a temporary phase of self-administration overseen by an external guarantor could be acceptable. From his standpoint, he added, “Israel is the appropriate party for this,” in reference to his proposal for Suwayda to become an “independent entity.”

He went on to advocate what he described as “division and the establishment of autonomous governance alongside independence,” claiming that such an outcome would ensure “a better future for minorities and regional stability across the Middle East.”

Al-Hijri also launched sharp criticism at the Syrian government, which has consistently emphasized that the Druze are an essential component of the Syrian nation. He alleged that “the current system is the most brutal,” asserting that it was formed as a “direct extension of al-Qaeda.”

In addition, he commended Israel’s actions that violate Syrian sovereignty under the stated aim of protecting Druze communities, remarking, “It is no secret that Israel was the only country in the world that intervened militarily.”
