Iranian President Warns Against Efforts to Divide Nation
The Iranian leader emphasized the government's duty to hear from nonviolent demonstrators, yet cautioned that hostile forces exploit public dissent to fracture national unity, the semi-official a news agency reported.
"We are obligated to listen to peaceful protesters," the president said, adding that "there are those who seek to ride the wave of protests in order to divide the nation."
Pezeshkian called for empowering citizens through participatory governance while maintaining defenses against attempts to weaponize civil unrest for subversive ends.
"We must give our people their sovereignty and involve them in decision-making, while remaining vigilant against attempts to turn protests into sedition," he said.
The president pointed to recent events demonstrating that adversaries—naming the Israeli government and its Western allies—have persistently worked to trigger chaos and splinter Iranian society.
He said such actors attempted to exploit social demands by pushing protests toward "violence, assassinations, and the destruction of public property," including attacks on military forces and service facilities, "have no place in any norm of civil protest."
Pezeshkian stressed that government officials must reevaluate their approach to citizen engagement, eliminating any justification for those attempting to transform demonstrations into vehicles for animosity and provocation, saying that "sincere service to the people is the primary barrier against enemy infiltration."
His statements arrive amid mounting friction between Tehran and Washington following Donald Trump's recent declarations that a "massive armada" was moving toward Iran, alongside his call for Tehran to "come to the table" for negotiations.
Iranian authorities have issued warnings that any American military action would trigger a "swift and comprehensive" response, while maintaining Tehran's willingness to engage in dialogue exclusively under what it describes as "fair, balanced and noncoercive terms."
