Syrian Forces Take Control of Strategic al-Tanf Base
According to Syrian government sources, speaking to a news agency on Wednesday, the Syrian Army has assumed authority over the base and has stationed its troops there.
Reports indicate that US forces relocated to a site known as Tower 22, positioned near the demilitarized zone along the Jordan-Syria border. This site is approximately 22 kilometers (13 miles) away from al-Tanf.
While around 200 US soldiers were reportedly stationed at al-Tanf at one time, the exact number of personnel currently deployed at Tower 22 has not been verified.
The al-Tanf facility, which underwent expansion in 2017 and 2018, had been utilized by the US in conjunction with surveillance balloons to monitor the activities of Iran-backed groups and the ISIS (Daesh) terrorist organization. The base oversaw operations across an extensive area stretching from the Jordanian border to the Euphrates River.
