Trump Plans to Have Limited Involvement in US-Iran Geneva Talks

(MENAFN) Donald Trump has stated that he will be "indirectly" involved in upcoming negotiations between the US and Iran, scheduled to begin Tuesday in Geneva, as stated by reports.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said he believes Iran is interested in reaching a deal over its nuclear program.

This second round of talks in Switzerland comes amid ongoing military threats by the US related to Iran’s deadly crackdown on anti-government protests and disputes over its nuclear ambitions.

On Monday, Tehran’s foreign ministry suggested that Washington’s stance on the nuclear issue has moved toward "a more realistic one." Iran indicated that Tuesday’s meeting, mediated by Oman, will focus on its nuclear program and the potential lifting of US sanctions, while the US has expressed interest in also addressing Iran’s missile capabilities.

Framing the talks as "very important," Trump suggested that Tehran is motivated to negotiate.

"I don't think they want the consequences of not making a deal," he said, adding that Iran learned the impact of a tough stance last summer when the US bombed Iranian nuclear sites.

"We could have had a deal instead of sending the B-2s in to knock out their nuclear potential. And we had to send the B-2s," Trump said, referring to the stealth bombers used in the strikes. "I hope they're going to be more reasonable."

His warnings come alongside a US military build-up in the Middle East over recent weeks, with satellite imagery confirming the location of the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln near Iran.
