UK Report Denounces Government Over Israeli Football Fan Bar

(MENAFN) A recent UK parliamentary report has found that the British government’s intervention to ban Israeli football fans from a Europa League match in Birmingham last year “inflamed tensions” rather than ensuring safety.

The report revealed that West Midlands Police (WMP) relied on fabricated AI-generated information about a non-existent football match to classify Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters as high-risk. This assessment underpinned the recommendation to bar fans from attending the November match against Aston Villa.

Karen Bradley, Chair of the Home Affairs Committee, criticized the government, saying its intervention was “clumsy and came too late,” doing little to reduce tensions. The report also raised concerns about the local council’s Safety Advisory Group (SAG) potentially being influenced by political objectives.

Councillor Mumtaz Hussain, representing Birmingham’s Aston ward, participated in early SAG deliberations and had lobbied against Israeli fans in prior political activities. She did not recuse herself until midway through the process, highlighting concerns over bias affecting public safety decisions.

The report emphasizes the risks of political influence on safety assessments in sensitive and divisive matters like international sports events.
