Iran Proposes Special Framework for Strait of Hormuz

(MENAFN) Iran’s government has called for the establishment of a “special regime” governing the Strait of Hormuz, arguing that the strategic waterway should be treated as a “special asset” tied to Iran’s interests, according to state media reports.

Government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani said in remarks carried by a news outlet and cited in an interview with Russian media that a dedicated regulatory framework is needed for the passage.

"Like all assets that serve as tools for the type of interaction and regulation of interactions with other countries, a special regime must be defined for this passage," she said.

The proposal comes as maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz continues to face serious disruptions following US measures targeting Iranian ports after unsuccessful diplomatic talks involving Washington and Tehran.

The strait, which normally carries a significant share of global oil shipments, has become a focal point in the broader energy crisis linked to the ongoing conflict that erupted on Feb. 28, according to reports.

In response to escalating tensions, Iran has launched missile and drone attacks targeting Israel and other regional states hosting US military assets, further intensifying regional instability.
