Israeli Editorial Accuses Netanyahu of Extending Conflicts for Political Gain

(MENAFN) An Israeli newspaper editorial published Friday argued that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is continuing military operations in Gaza and Lebanon for political and personal reasons rather than strategic necessity.

“It’s impossible not to suspect that the bloodshed is meant to serve the prime minister’s political and personal goals,” the editorial stated.

According to the article, Netanyahu has intensified military actions in both Gaza and Lebanon following what it described as the unsuccessful outcome of the conflict with Iran and the subsequent halt in hostilities initiated by US President Donald Trump.

The editorial pointed to recent developments in southern Lebanon, where hundreds of thousands of residents were instructed to leave areas south of the Zahrani River after the Israeli military designated the region a combat zone and announced plans to increase operations against Hezbollah.

It argued that recent events, including targeted killings in Beirut, indicate a significant escalation and could reflect efforts to provoke Hezbollah into a broader confrontation with Israel.

The article also referenced Netanyahu’s recent statement that he had directed the military to expand Israeli control in Gaza from 60% to 70% of the territory.

“Under the guise of ‘cease-fires’ in Lebanon and Gaza that it did not obey for even a moment, the army is expanding the area of both combat zones,” the newspaper said.

According to the editorial, Israeli authorities have justified the escalation in Lebanon as a response to Hezbollah drone attacks, while in Gaza the stated objective is to weaken Hamas as it strengthens its position.

“Instead of finally recognizing the limits of force, the government orders the military to intensify the strikes and deepen the occupation,” it said.

The newspaper further described the war in Lebanon as “futile and pointless,” arguing that its goals remain unclear and that there is little indication of how or when it might end.

“Such a war must end immediately. Every additional day is another day of needless killing,” the editorial said.
