Iraqi Group Moves to Bring Weapons Under State Control

(MENAFN) A prominent Iraqi Shiite political and armed group has announced plans to begin disengaging its fighters from the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) and place its weapons under full state authority.

According to reports, Asaib Ahl al-Haq said Tuesday it will establish a committee tasked with carrying out the procedures required for the transition, including documenting personnel, weapons, vehicles, equipment, and logistical assets, and coordinating directly with Iraq’s military leadership.

The committee will be headed by Jawad al-Talibawi, with Rafid Saleh Ali, Abdullah Shaker Kamel, and Ali Hamza Kadhim serving as members, the group said in a statement.

As stated by reports, the move is intended to align the organization with state institutions and ensure that its military resources come under government oversight in accordance with official security frameworks.

The group, founded in 2006 after splitting from the Mahdi Army of the Sadrist movement led by Qais al-Khazali, has long been considered one of Iraq’s most influential armed factions.

Reports indicate that Asaib Ahl al-Haq is the second major faction in Iraq to announce steps toward integration into state structures, following a similar decision by Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, who previously dissolved his “Peace Brigades” and aligned them with state authorities, a move welcomed by government officials.

The latest development is being viewed as part of broader efforts to consolidate armed groups under centralized state control.
