US Envoy Praises Iraqi Plan to Bring Armed Groups Under State Control

(MENAFN) According to reports, US Special Envoy for Syria and Iraq Tom Barrack has welcomed recent steps by Iraqi authorities aimed at integrating armed factions into state institutions and placing all weapons under government control.

Barrack, who also serves as US Ambassador to Türkiye, congratulated Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi, describing the initiative as an important milestone toward strengthened governance and national stability.

In a statement posted on the social media platform X, he said: “We extend our congratulations to Iraqi Prime Minister @AliFalihAlzaidy on this significant step forward, which represents the nascent foundation for a renewed Iraqi self-governance — grounded in restored sovereignty, enduring stability, and the promise of national renewal,” according to reports.

He also praised armed groups that have agreed to surrender their weapons to state authorities, stating: “We likewise commend those groups whose principled decision to return all weapons to the Iraqi state will contribute to the architecture of order.”

Barrack added that the prime minister’s confidence in the process was “well-placed,” describing the development as “only the beginning,” according to reports.

The announcement follows moves by several Iraqi armed factions to align more closely with state structures. According to reports, Asaib Ahl al-Haq, a prominent Shia political and military group, has decided to form a committee to begin the process of separating from the Popular Mobilization Forces and transferring its weapons to state control.

The group, founded in 2006 after splitting from the Mahdi Army linked to the Sadrist movement, is one of the most influential armed organizations in Iraq.

It is also the second major group to signal integration into state institutions, following earlier decisions by other factions aligned with cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, who previously disbanded his “Peace Brigades” and brought them under state authority.
