Iraq Moves to Bring All Weapons Under State Control
Spokesman Sabah al-Nu’man said the body was formed under the directive of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and has now started implementing its mandate.
“The committee, formed under the directive of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces (Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi), has begun its work to place weapons under state control,” he told Al-Iraqiya News, according to a state news agency.
He said the committee will develop procedures to integrate relevant military formations and transfer weapons, equipment, and bases to Iraqi security institutions.
Al-Nu’man also noted that restructuring efforts involving elements of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) will be accompanied by safeguards for the rights of its members.
The PMF is an official Iraqi security umbrella formed in 2014 following a religious decree by top cleric Ali al-Sistani to fight ISIS (Daesh), and was later incorporated into state forces by government decision in 2016.
