Russia Weighs Restructuring of Military Footprint in Syria

(MENAFN) Moscow has acknowledged for the first time that the future shape of its military presence in Syria is under active discussion, signaling a potential reconfiguration of assets that have underpinned Russian power projection across the Middle East for years.

Speaking to journalists at a media briefing in Moscow on Wednesday, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova confirmed that Russia's military footprint in Syria is on the table in ongoing contacts with Damascus — specifically in the context of a "possible restructuring of the functionality" of Russian military facilities in the country.

"However, this, again, falls under the purview of our security apparatus – the Ministry of Defense," Zakharova said, stopping short of elaborating on the scope or timeline of any potential changes.

The spokeswoman struck an upbeat tone on the broader bilateral relationship, saying that cooperation between the two nations was advancing "very actively," with both government bodies and business communities on each side engaged in efforts to deepen ties.

Strategic Assets at Stake
The remarks carry considerable weight given what Russia stands to lose — or reshape. Moscow currently operates two critical military installations on Syrian soil: a naval logistics base in Tartus on the Mediterranean coast, and the Khmeimim air base in the northwestern province of Latakia — both of which have served as cornerstones of Russia's military reach across the region and into Africa.

Any restructuring of those facilities would mark a significant shift in the regional security landscape, with implications stretching well beyond Syrian borders.
