Lebanon’s President Links Israeli Withdrawal to Strengthening Arms Control

(MENAFN) Joseph Aoun said on Tuesday that a withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory would help the state extend its authority across the country and remove the justification for any armed presence outside official state control, according to a statement from the Lebanese presidency.

He made the remarks during a meeting with a European parliamentary delegation led by French lawmaker Arnaud Le Gall, who heads the French-Lebanese Friendship Committee.

Aoun stated that Israeli withdrawal would allow Lebanon to consolidate state authority, end the presence of non-state armed displays, and eliminate any rationale for retaining weapons outside the control of the national army.

He also emphasized the need for a comprehensive political, military, economic, and social strategy to address the issue of Hezbollah’s weapons in order to safeguard stability across the country.

The Lebanese government has been working on a plan to ensure all arms are placed under state authority, including those held by Hezbollah. The group, however, maintains that its weapons are necessary for resisting Israeli occupation and continues to reject disarmament proposals.
